Detailed description

300th anniversary of the birth of Matej Bel

Silver commemorative coin issued in Czechoslovakia in 1984 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Matej Bel of Očová. These coins are very rarely obtained and are therefore highly sought after by collectors and investors.

This rare silver coin is housed in a plastic capsule, certificate of authenticity not included.

Matej Bel of Očová (Hungarian: Bél Mátyás, German: Matthias Bél) (March 22, 1684, Očová, Hungary - August 29, 1749, Bratislava) was a Slovak polymath, encyclopedist, philosopher, writer, educator, evangelical preacher, pioneer of the Slovak Enlightenment, one of the most important European scientists of the 18th century, founder of modern homeland science in Hungary and model of the French encyclopedist Denis Diderot.

He came from a peasant family from Očová, the family surname in the village was Funtík. He was a pupil of private schools in Lucenec, then in Kalinov and Dolné Strehová. He is the author of about 50 works, studies and articles in Latin, German, Hungarian and Biblical Czech. He was interested in history, geography, ethnography, Hungarian literature and culture, linguistics, economics and natural sciences. His work is interesting because he often deals specifically with the way of life and characteristics of the Slovaks and speaks with some admiration of the natural talent and industriousness of the Slovaks.

In his scientific work he advocated modern methods - collective work, following a set plan, studying sources and archives, and a critical attitude to facts. In this respect, he had already surpassed even the Enlightenment.
