Endangered nature

The fourth silver coloured coin of 2016 from the Czech Mint's Endangered Nature series belongs to an extraordinary representative of our critically endangered flora - an aquatic plant called Nymphaea alba, which is better known in this country as the white water lily.

The graceful plant, which has always been a symbol of life and resurrection, owes its Latin name to a nymph who, according to legend, fell in love with the ancient Greek Hercules. However, he did not return her affection and the fairy died of unhappy love. After her death, she was transformed into a beautiful flower. The stems and stalks of the water lily flower have cavities filled with air that allow them to float on the surface. The water lily occurs naturally in still and slow-moving waters and is artificially planted as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens. However, wild water lilies are critically endangered and protected by law. Their extinction is mainly due to water pollution and changes in living conditions, to which these plants are very sensitive.

The reverse side of the silver Smart coin from MgA. Martin Dašek's artwork presents the water lily in all its glory - thanks to the colouring, even in vivid colours. The description gives the Czech and full Latin name of the plant and the whole composition is complemented by a red glass rhinestone. The obverse side of the coin bears the attributes of its issuer, which is the island of Niue - the portrait and name of the Commonwealth monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2016 and the face value of the coin 1 DOLLAR (NZD). These essential elements are complemented by an ornamental floral motif.

The Endangered Nature series will continue in 2017. You can store all four 2016 issues in a handy collector's box, which you can find in the Czech Mint's offer.
