The list of endangered animals includes a number of animals in red that were, until relatively recently, common in nature. However, man's self-centeredness has brought many of these species to the brink of extinction, or has erased their representatives from the Earth altogether. For example, by converting roofs and attic spaces or by improperly closing entrances to old mines and caves, beautiful mammals - big bats - have lost their habitats. The Czech Mint's sought-after series Endangered Nature is a call for greater consideration of the fauna and flora with which we share our planet on an equal footing. The newly minted silver coloured Smart coin 1 NZD Big Bat in top quality proof is now included.
The big bat was originally a cave species. However, in our geographical conditions, summer colonies of females inhabit the floors of large buildings, and are often found in the attics of castles and churches. In each such colony, hundreds or even thousands can be counted! In winter, the bats then move to their wintering grounds, most often underground in unfrozen ground - caves, tunnels, cellars, etc. The big bat feeds mainly on large beetles and butterflies, which it collects directly from the ground and locates by ultrasound. It mates twice a year and after a 60-70 day gestation period, the female usually gives birth to one young, which is able to live independently at the age of two months.
In the Czech Republic, the big bat is found practically throughout the territory, but more abundantly at lower and middle altitudes, but the only underground summer colony is located in the Hranice Abyss. The beauty of this creature can now also be admired thanks to the masterful depiction on the reverse of the thematic Smart coin from the Czech Mint, created by academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová. The colourful bat in flight is accompanied by an inscription stating the genus and species name in Czech and Latin. The obverse side is the work of another skilled artist - MgA. Martin Dasek - and represents a collage made up of attributes of the issuer and a bravura forest corner. The exquisite medal work and the strong message of the Smart coin clearly belong in your collections, book one of the 1000 pieces of the limited edition!
