Detailed description

Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds - North Wind

An exclusive Bank of New Zealand silver coin issued for 2022 and struck in a premium proof grade of 1 kilogram of 99.9% pure silver, the Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds series draws on Maori mythology. The first coin in the series features the North Wind.

The reverse of the coin presents a depiction of Te Hau Raki, the North Wind, bringing warm air from Te Hiku o Te Ika (the tail of the fish) in the style of traditional Maori art. The sculpture uses the decorative element of koru, whose spiral curve follows the shape of the unfurling fern. Inscriptions in English and Maori accompany the coin's rim. Along with the denomination, the description also includes the name of the series and the coin.
The Four Winds, Ngā Hau e Whā, are the four sons of the mighty weather god Tāwhirimātea, a descendant of the first divine pair. The birth of the winds is told in part in a Maori legend.
After Tāne, the god of the forest, separated Ranginui, the father of the sky, and Papatūanuka, the mother of the earth, from his embrace, he gained for himself and his brothers the coveted freedom. The only one who disapproved of the separation of his parents was Tāwhirimātea. He was furious and decided to take revenge on his siblings. In his anger, he created the Four Winds and with them many other children, who are essentially manifestations of storms and bad weather. They brought destruction to the refuges of their uncles through persecution. They broke trees in the forests or caused great storms at sea. The protracted course of the divine war ends with a truce. Tāwhirimātea joined his father and became the guardian of the Four Winds - Ngā hau e whā. He remembers the betrayal inflicted on his parents only occasionally, but then with a new burst of anger come devastating storms, cyclones and tornadoes.

The obverse of the coin bears a portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2022" and weight and fineness information.

The coin is housed for the deluxe box with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to only 100 pieces for the whole world !
