Detailed description
70th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Issued in 2023 and minted in 5 Oz of the purest 99.9% silver in a premium quality proof, this exclusive silver coin commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
The design on the reverse of the coin bears a portrait of Elizabeth II from her coronation in 1953. The young Queen is depicted from the side in a larger figure. She wears the Crown of the British Empire on her head and holds a royal scepter and an apple in her hands. She is dressed in an embroidered ceremonial dress with the emblems of the Commonwealth nations. A long ermine cloak is draped over her shoulders. The royal monogram 'E II R' completes the motif at the bottom. The background is a selective gilt gothic rosette referring to the place of coronation in Westminster Abbey. The rim of the coin bears the inscription 'CORONATION OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II'.
Elizabeth II became Queen on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father George VI. However, the coronation ceremony did not take place until 16 months later. At the time, Britain was still recovering from the hardships and losses of World War II, and the accession of the young monarch was a symbol of renewal and hope for a better future for all Commonwealth countries.
On June 2, 1953, a procession made its way from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, the traditional coronation site for English and British monarchs since 1066. Elite British Guards, Commonwealth military units, European monarchs, and supreme representatives of allied nations followed Elizabeth II, accompanied by Prince Philip in a gilded Gold State Coach. Crowds of up to 3 million people lined the streets for the parade. The unique event was broadcast for the first time in history by the BBC, and in addition to the 8,000,000 invited guests, an additional 20 million viewers, equivalent to 40% of the British population, were able to watch. The coronation ceremony, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the supreme leader of the Church of England, began with the church ceremony, followed by the Queen's oath and the sacred anointing with oil. The robed Elizabeth II accepted the royal apple, sceptre and crown of St Edward. The traditional cry of "God save the Queen!" was then heard.
The coronation of Elizabeth II was a significant milestone, heralding the dedicated service of the longest reigning monarch in British history.
The obverse features a coin portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The background repeats the gothic rosette motif from the reverse of the coin. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions 'TOKELAU 2023', 'TEN DOLLARS', 'ELIZABETH II', the weight and purity of the metal and the Tokelau flag.
The coin is delivered in a representative box together with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
