The Great Greek Mythology series
The Polish Mint Mint XXI comes up with the most extensive series of The Great Greek Mythology to date. The issue of this unique series is planned for 4 years and will offer a total of 36 silver selectively gilded coins in 3 different sizes. The individual coins will introduce us to the most famous figures of Greek mythology, worked down to the smallest detail thanks to the high relief design.
The ancient Greeks believed that gods had the same qualities and emotions as mortals. This is probably why Greek legends are so popular and contain a huge number of stories. In them, the gods act like humans, they can be noble or vengeful, deceitful or honest. They can love and hate, envy and wish, feel anger and joy.
Each silver coin tells a fascinating story about the gods, heroes and mythical creatures of ancient Olympus.
Nike (2 oz)
The reverse of this coin depicts the goddess of victory, Nike. She is depicted in traditional robes and with outstretched wings, holding a gilded laurel wreath for the victor. This is a symbol of triumph, which is a link to the victorious traditions of ancient Greece. The background is complemented by floral patterns and the circle is decorated with delicate motifs. The name of the coin, ''NIKE'', appears on the underside.
Theseus and Ariadne (2 oz)
The reverse of the coin depicts the love couple, Theseus and Ariadne. Théseus, wearing a battle helmet, receives from Ariadne a gilded ball of thread, which he uses to find his way out of the labyrinth after defeating the mythical Minotaur. The background of the coin completes the view of the labyrinth. The inscription ''THESEUS and ARIADNE'' at the bottom complements the traditional Greek design in the coin's rim.
Charon (1 oz)
The reverse of the coin depicts the mythological creature Charon, the ferryman of souls to the realm of the dead. The typical appearance of the hooded, haggard old man is complemented by a barque with victims. With his right hand he holds a long pole and in his left he shows the gilded coins, his reward for the transport. In addition to traditional Greek designs, the background depicts the entrance to the underworld. The name of the coin, ''CHARON'', completes the underside.
The obverse depicts the Temple of Zeus in ancient Olympia, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The year of issue is written at the top of the inner circle and the purity of the coin at the bottom. The outer ring is decorated with a typical Greek design with the inscription ''REPUBLIQUE DU CAMEROUN'', along with the face value and weight. The centre is crossed by two ancient columns.
The coins are supplied in a luxury box with a certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of 500 pieces for each coin.
