Vitus Jonassen Bering in silver
An exclusive set of 2 silver coins (partly gold plated) issued by the British Virgin Islands in 2011 and minted by the Pobjoy Mint in England, dedicated to the Danish seafarer and explorer Vitus J. Bering. On 13 August 1728, in the service of Tsar Peter I, Bering led an expedition that reached the easternmost point of the Chukchi Peninsula. Bering's expedition succeeded in crossing between Asia and America, proving that the continents were not connected.
The reverse of the first coin shows Bering's ship sailing towards a gilded sunset. The inscriptions "TEN DOLLARS", "1681-1741 "and "VITUS J. BERING" follow. The second coin shows Bering's portrait and his ship under the gilded monument of St. Peter. The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley and the year of issue.
The coins are supplied in a luxury wooden box along with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 5000 pieces for the whole world!
