OZNAMENI_CESKA_MINCOVNACzechoslovak airmen in the RAF
The popular Czech Mint series dedicated to Czechoslovaks serving in the RAF during World War II welcomes its third addition. This time, a set of four gold coins introduces our top aviators - specifically the air aces.
The term 'air ace' first appeared in France during the First World War, when this title was bestowed on airmen who managed to shoot down at least 5 enemy machines. In the following global conflict, when air battles were, so to speak, the order of the day, Czechoslovak pilots could finally demonstrate their skill and zeal. These four warriors were among them:
The paths of our Aces were varied - they passed through Poland, France and Africa - but they all ended up in the UK, where they got the chance to fight the hated German aggressors and helped save the island kingdom from falling. For this they deserve the undying gratitude of all the generations that followed...
The author of the four commemorative coins is ac. sculptor. The reverse sides of the coins bear faithful portraits of the pilots wearing aviation hoods and goggles. The description gives their names and the square mosaic is actually a list of their successful certain kills - 20, 17, 15 and 12 enemy machines. The obverse side is common to all the stamps - dominated by a detailed depiction of the dashboard of the legendary Hurricane fighter. The composition of the obverse is complemented by the details of the island of Niue (the issuer, which allows the Czech Mint to mint its own coins), i.e. the name and profile of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2017 and the face value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD).
The set of coins is stored in a luxurious wooden case. Its lid is decorated with a thematic illustration of a pilot and the Mosquito night fighter aircraft, flown by Karel Kuttelwascher, for example. An integral part of the package is a booklet with an expert treatise by military historian PhDr. Lubor Vaclavů.
