Collections - Old Czech Legends

Rare set of 12 gold medals minted by the State Mint of the Slovak Republic in 2008. The motifs on the medals depict Old Czech legends. The obverse side is dedicated to these legendary heroes and heroines. The reverse side depicts "Rumours and Fates" - the second lunette from the "Homeland" cycle of the National Theatre art decoration by Mikoláš Alš.

This set of gold medals is rarely seen and is therefore highly sought after by collectors and investors. The medals come in a luxury wooden box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1000 pieces for the whole world!

Old Czech Legends

Old Czech Tales is a book by Alois Jirásek that describes events from Czech history based on folklore and some historical facts. It was first published in 1894 by the Prague publishing house J. R. Vilímek as the 11th volume in the Vilímek's Library of Teenage Youth edition. With the exception of the Protectorate period, it was published repeatedly and frequently, and was also popular with the communist regime of Gottwald, under which it was published with an afterword by Zdeněk Nejedlý.

The first edition and many other editions, especially until the Second World War, were illustrated by Věnceslav Černý, the post-war editions were published with illustrations by Antonín Procházka, and from about 1950 the book was published by Mladá fronta and SNDK with illustrations by Mikoláš Alš. With illustrations by Věnceslav Černý, it was reprinted in Czechoslovak Writer in 1981, in Albatross in 2000 and 2008, and in Otto Publishing in 2008.

Based on this book, a 91-minute colour puppet animated film of the same name was made in 1952, directed by Jiří Trnka.
