Augustus

Augustus (Latin: IMPERATOR-CAESAR-DIVI-FILIVS-AVGVSTVS;Augustus 23 September 63 BC in Rome as Gaius Octavius - 19 August 14 AD. in Nola near Naples), also known as Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus (Czech: Octavian), was the first emperor of the Roman Empire and founder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, ruling from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD.

The young Octavius was adopted by his great-uncle Gaius Julius Caesar and began his political career after his assassination on the Ides of March in 44 BC. The following year he joined with Marc Antony and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in the so-called Second Triumvirate. However, after defeating Caesar's assassins, the triumvirs opposed each other. Lepidus was forced to retire, while Antony committed suicide after Octavianus defeated his army at the Battle of Actia in 31 BC.

After his victory, Octavianus formally restored the republic (restitutio rei publicae) by transferring the government to the Roman senate. In reality, however, he retained all power in the state. However, unlike Caesar or Sulla, he did not maintain a dictatorship, but claimed a variety of different lifetime powers and titles, thus transforming the Roman form of government from a republic to a monarchy in the form of a principate. This change marked not only the beginning of Augustus' nearly forty-year reign as emperor, but the beginning of an entirely new epoch in Roman history. His reign was underpinned by material gains in foreign campaigns, the establishment of patronage relationships with thousands of loyal soldiers and veterans, the authority of many honours bestowed by the Senate, and the respect of the people, whose security and prosperity he ensured after many decades of civil wars. Augustus controlled the majority of the legions, which he enforced with his formidable armed might, and exercised his will in the Senate.

Augustus's reign began a long period of peace and prosperity known as the Pax Romana ("Roman peace"), which the Mediterranean world enjoyed for more than two centuries despite continuing border conflicts. Augustus pushed the boundaries of the Roman state and further secured them by creating many client kingdoms and diplomatically negotiating peace with the Parthian Empire. He reformed the Roman tax system, had the road network expanded, rebuilt many cities, and established a standing army and a praetorian guard. After his death, Augustus was declared by the Senate to be a god worshipped by the Romans, and the month of Sextilis was officially renamed Augustus in his honour.
