Detailed description
Platinum one ounce coin from "The Queen´s Beasts" series
The Royal British Mint's successful "The Queen's Beasts" coin series has produced a coin minted in 99.95% platinum weighing one ounce (31.1g) for 2017. "The Queen's Beast" is a series of ten sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The sculptures represent the ten heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, the falcon of the Plantagenets, the black bull of the Dukes of Clarence, the Yale Beaufort, the white lion of Mortimer, the white greyhound of Richmond, the red dragon of Wales, the unicorn of Scotland and the white horse of Hanover.
The coin bears on its reverse a crowned lion, the symbol of England, in a dramatic pose, holding in his paws the armorial shield of England. The scene is framed by a circle of the inscriptions "LION OF ENGLAND", the weight "1 oz", the fineness "PLATINUM, 999.5", the year of issue and the initials of the designer "JC".
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by the same artist as the reverse, with the inscription 'ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D." and the denomination "100 POUNDS".
