Prestige Set 2009 - Peace Parks of Southern Africa Series

The Peace Parks luxury silver coin set was issued by the Republic of South Africa in 2009 and dedicated to the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area. The area was established on 11 June 2001 and links Sehlabathebe National Park in the Kingdom of Lesotho and uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park in KwaZulu-Natal in what is now South Africa.sada_stribrnych_minci_peace_parks_Maloti_Drakensberg_2009_proof

This park supports unique mountain and sub-alpine ecosystems and is located in the Drakensberg Mountains, which form the highest areas in the sub-region. The park is also home to the largest rock art gallery in the world, with hundreds of sites and thousands of murals painted by the Bushmen (San).

The reverse of the four silver coins show the face value and various motifs of this protected park:

The 2 Oz coin beautifully depicts the so-called "Amphitheatre" of the basalt cliffs of the Dragon Mountains from which the Thugela River flows. The Cape Vultures, a highly endangered species due to ever worsening breeding conditions, are depicted on the 1 Oz coin in flight in the Dragon Mountains above the river. The 1/2 Oz coin depicts a typical Basotho on his horse in front of a river in the Lesotho Mountains with traditional dwellings. The last 1/4 Oz coin depicts the Aloe polyphylla, which is on the endangered plant species list and can only be found on the peaks of the Maloti Mountains in the Kingdom of Lesotho. The obverse shows the national emblem of South Africa and the year of issue.

The coins come in a beautiful wooden gift box tied with a leather cord along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1000 pieces for the whole world!
