Detailed description
Pantheon - 100 g
The unique gold coin issued by the Solomon Islands State in 2021 in 99.9% gold purity and weighing 100 g in top quality reverse proof is dedicated to a unique architectural monument - the Pantheon.
The reverse of the coin depicts the precisely crafted dome of the Roman Pantheon. The motif is created in four layers of embossing at different depths using an innovative coinage technique that creates a perfect three-dimensional effect. The motif is complemented by the inscription "Pantheon" and the year of issue "2021".
The Pantheon is part of the historic centre of Rome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Emperor Hadrian in 125 AD by rebuilding the original private sanctuary of Marcus Agrippa. The name, composed of the words pan (all) and theos (god), reflects its original purpose, used to worship all the ancient gods.
In 609 it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the holy martyrs, whose relics were to be placed under the floor of the temple. Perhaps because the Pantheon became a Christian place of worship, it is one of the best preserved ancient monuments today. The circular structure has perfectly harmonious proportions, its width matching its height. The entrance leads through a massive portico supported by Corinthian columns of Egyptian granite. The seven-bay aula is covered by a unique dome. For the first time in the history of architecture, concrete was used for its construction. The poured pozzolanic concrete made from volcanic ash is easily equal to today's material and its strength increases with age.
The perfect hemispherical roof weighing almost 5 tonnes was created without the use of supports or reinforcements. Ceramic vessels, pumice stones and interior decoration were used to lighten the concrete. An interesting visual effect is created by the recessed ceiling cassettes, which recede in five rows towards the unroofed top. A 9 m diameter oculus serves as a source of natural lighting.
The Pantheon has retained its uniqueness to this day. The dome still has the largest unreinforced vault in the world and its diameter of 43.22 m was not surpassed until 1913.
The obverse depicts a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley, surrounded by the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II', 'SOLOMON ISLANDS', the artist's initials 'IRB', a weight of '100g' and a face value of '50 DOLLARS'.
The coin comes in its original gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in an extremely limited mintage of only 49 pieces for the entire world!
