Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds
An exclusive set of four silver coloured coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand for 2020 and minted in premium proof quality, each weighing 1/2 troy ounce of pure 99.9% silver, is dedicated to Maori mythology - Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds.
The reverse of each coin represents one of the four prevailing winds in New Zealand (Aotearoa in Maori). Colour printing was used to highlight the temperature and nature of each wind. Te Hau Rāwhiti (orange, red, yellow) comes from the east and follows the path of the sun travelling across the sky. The south wind Te hau Tonga (light blue, purple, white) brings rain and cooling. The westerly wind Te Hau ā Uru (dark and light green) is the prevailing wind in New Zealand. Te Hau Raku (dark and light blue, purple) is a warm wind that blows from the north from Te Hiku o Te Ika (the tail of the fish). The coin's circumference is completed by the denomination, the series name in English and Maori, and the names of the winds in Maori.
The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2020" and weight and fineness information.
The coins are encased in an acrylic frame and placed in a gift box. Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world !
