Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds
An exclusive set of four gold coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand for 2020 and minted in premium proof quality, each weighing 1/4 troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, is dedicated to Maori mythology - Ngā Hau e Whā - The Four Winds.
The reverse of each coin represents one of the four prevailing winds in New Zealand (Aotearoa in Maori). Te Hau Rāwhiti wind comes from the east and follows the path of the sun travelling across the sky. The southerly Te hau Tonga wind brings rain and cooling. The westerly wind Te Hau ā Uru is the prevailing wind in New Zealand. Te Hau Raku is a warm wind that blows from the north from Te Hiku o Te Ika (the tail of the fish). The coin's circumference is completed by the denomination, the series name in English and Maori, and the names of the winds in Maori.
The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2020" and weight and fineness information.
The coins are housed in a handmade New Zealand wood box. Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition of only 75 pieces for the whole world !
