About the Münze Österreich Mint
TheAustrian Mint Münze Österreich is the official mint of Austria, based in Vienna and is the exclusive producer of Austrian circulation coins. It is a global player in the international coin industry and one of the world's leading mints. It is 100% owned by the Austrian Central Bank and is the only one with the right to mint currency.
History of the Mint
Its history dates back to 1194 and the Austrian Duke Leopold V of the Babenberger family. Leopold V captured the legendary King Richard the Lionheart of England on his return from the Crusades. He was paid an astronomical ransom for Richard's release and was forced to establish a mint in Vienna to store it. It currently employs around 200 people and produces around 450 million coins a year. He is also one of the shareholders of the Swiss refinery Argor Heraeus.
Gold bullion
In addition to gold investment coins, Münze Österreich produces gold bars weighing 1 g, 2 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 31.3 g (1 Oz), 50 g, 100 g, 250 g, 500 g and 1,000 g. The ingots weighing 1 g, 5 g and 10 g contain on their reverse a depiction of the Lipizzaner horse, which is made by laser, a special holographic technique known as Kinebar.
Gold and silver investment coins
The Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic) investment coins minted since 1989 are among the most popular gold investment products in the Czech Republic. The Mint mints these popular coins weighing 1/10 Oz, 1/4 Oz, 1/2 Oz, 1 Oz. Since 2008, it has also been minting silver Wiener coins.
