Maui and the Sun 2018
An exclusive set of two gold coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand for 2018 and minted in premium proof quality, each weighing 1/2 troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, are dedicated to Maori mythology and story - How Māui slowed the sun.
The coins tell the mythical story of how the demigod Māui slowed down the sun to make it shine longer. The reverse of one coin depicts Māui holding the sun (Tamanuiterā) by its ropes, which is the motif of the other coin. The Māori art style design is complemented by the inscriptions "TAHI Tārā" and the denomination on both coins. Both coins are encased in an acrylic frame with a rope motif that imaginatively connects them. The rope motif is also depicted on the wooden box in which the frame is placed.
The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions 'NEW ZEALAND', 'ELIZABETH II', the year of issue '2018' and weight and fineness information.
Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition - only 150 pieces for the whole world!
Notice
Please note that the wooden box is handmade and may show minor imperfections, differences in color and texture of the wood.
