Maui and the Fish 2018
An exclusive set of two gold coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand for 2018 and minted in premium proof quality, each weighing 1/2 troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, is dedicated to Māori mythology and story - How Maui captured the mighty fish
.
On the reverse of one coin is the figure of Maui holding a rope and catching a fish from a boat. The motif of the second coin is a depiction of a large fish. The Maori art style design is complemented by the inscriptions "TEKAU TARA" and the face value on both coins.
The coins tell a Maori legend about the geological origins of the North Island of New Zealand. The demigod Maui used magic to attract large schools of fish when hunting. On an expedition with his brothers, he hunted far from his homeland of Hawaiki and, using a hook made from the jawbone of his ancestor, caught a fish so huge that trees grew, houses stood and people lived on it. His scheming brothers wanted to eat the fish, and in trying to kill it, the fish became so agitated that mountains and valleys formed on its body. This, according to legend, is how the North Island of New Zealand was created, with its shape resembling a stingray. Legend also has it that Maui's canoe formed the South Island and the anchor formed Stewart Island. Interestingly, the legend was written at a time when the Maori had no maps, yet they described the layout and shape of the archipelago so accurately.
The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2018" and weight and fineness data.
Both coins are encased in an acrylic frame with a fishing hook and rope motif that imaginatively connects them. The redesigned fishing gear motif is also used as an indigenous design on the wooden box in which the frame is housed. Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition of only 150 pieces for the whole world !
