Māui and the First Dog - 2020

An exclusive set of two gold coins issued by the Bank of New Zealand for 2020 and minted in premium proof quality, each weighing 1/2 troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, dedicated to Maori mythology and story - How Māui created the first dog in New Zealand

.

The reverse of each coin tells part of the legend of the origin of the New Zealand dog. On the first coin, an angry Māui extends his hand to transform his brother-in-law Irawara into the form of a dog. The second coin depicts Irawaru after his transformation with his wife Hinauri, who is weeping over the loss of her husband. The background on both coins is decorated with Maori koru ornaments, which are accompanied by the denomination in English and Maori 'TEN DOLLARS' and 'TEKAU TARA' around the perimeter.
According to Maori legend, the fiery demigod Māui created the first dog in New Zealand. After returning from fishing, Māui punishes his brother-in-law Irawara and turns him into a dog. His sister Hinauri is looking for a husband and Māui advises her to call out "Moi! Moi!". At the call, the dog runs up to her. When Hinauri finds out the truth about her husband, she throws herself into the sea. There are several versions of the reason for the quarrel between the brothers-in-law. Māui is jealous of Irawar's fishing skills and catch, punishing him for his laziness and greed, or angry that he has not given him his cloak. Also, Hinauri's fate does not end with a jump into the sea, but continues with another story.

The obverse of each coin bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2020" and weight and fineness data.

The coins are housed in a handmade New Zealand wood box. The top lid is inlaid with a traditional design. Each set includes an original certificate of authenticity. The set was issued in a very limited edition of only 150 pieces for the whole world !

Notice
Please note that the wooden box is handmade and may show minor imperfections, differences in color and texture of the wood.
