Detailed description

The Queen´s Beasts 2016 - 2021

A unique collection of gold investment coins, struck in 1 Oz (31.21g) of the highest purity 99.99% gold, issued by the British Royal Mint between 2016 and 2021 in the "The Queen's Beasts" series. The collection includes all ten issues dedicated to the heraldic animals of Queen Elizabeth II - the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence, the Yale Beaufort, the White Lion of the Mortimers, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland, the White Horse of Hanover and the White Hound of Richmond.

Each of the coins depicts on its reverse one of the Queen's animals and an armorial shield from the genealogy of Elizabeth II. The rim of the design is decorated with the coin's name, weight, fineness, year of issue and the designer's initials 'JC'.

The Queen's Beasts set consists of the following coins:

The Lion of England (2016 issue)
Red Dragon of Wales (2017 issue) Edward III Griffin(2017 issue) Unicorn of Scotland (2018 issue) Black Bull of the Dukes of Clarence (2018 issue) Falcon of the Plantagenets (2019 issue) Yale of Beaufort (2019 issue) White Lion of Mortimer (2020 issue) White Horse of Hanover (2020 issue) White Hound of Richmond (2021 issue)

The coins are protected by a plastic capsule and housed in a deluxe wooden case.

The Queen's Beasts is a series of ten sculptures created by sculptor James Woodford to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.
The statues were placed in front of the glass wall of the West Annexe at Westminster Abbey. Endless processions could thus view the white sculptures with their coloured shields before the Coronation began. The heraldic animals represented the genealogy of the Queen and her links to royal ancestors in the long history of the British monarchy.
The plaster sculptures could not be exposed to the weather for long periods of time. After the event they were moved to the Great Hall of Hampton Court Palace and then to St George's Hall at Windsor. In 1959 they found a home in the British Dominion, Canada. On the centenary of Canadian Confederation, the originally white animal statues also received heraldic colours. Today, the original series of The Queen's Beasts statues are in the care of the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. The 1958 stone replicas are installed at Kew Gardens Botanic Gardens in London. The stylized form of the sculptures for the coin series was created by talented engraver Jody Clark.

The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the fifth and definitive coin portrait of the Queen. This is followed by the artist's initials "J.C.", the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REG.F.D." and the face value.
