Czech engineer, the first aviator, pioneer of Czech flying

prvni_let_jan_kaspar_zlata_medaile_pulunce_2011

Ing. Jan Kašpar was born on 20th May 1883 in Pardubice. Already at the end of his studies in mechanical engineering at the Prague Technical University he became interested in flying and in 1908 he started working for a company that produced aluminium parts for airships. At that time, the first successful experiments with heavier-than-air aircraft were already taking place in Europe, and he decided to become not only the first aviator in Bohemia, but also the first aircraft designer.

Kašpar made his famous flight Pardubice - Velká Chuchle, during which he covered the distance of 121 km in 92 minutes at an altitude of about 800 m, on 13 May 1911. He made several aeronautical and engineering attempts, but this historic flight was an impressive feat even in European terms and the longest cross-country flight in the then Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Kašpar donated the Blériot XI aircraft with which he made this flight in 1913 to the Technical Museum of the Kingdom of Bohemia, today's National Technical Museum in Prague, where it is still on display today.

The author of the design, MgA. Miroslav Schovanec, DiS, placed a portrait of Jan Kašpar on the obverse side with his signature and a hovering plane in the background. The inscription "The first long-distance flight of Jan Kašpar" and the year numbers indicating the centenary of the first long-distance flight.

The reverse side shows a frontal view of the Blériot XI, with which Kašpar made the first long-distance flight in Bohemia with a heavier-than-air aircraft.

Limited edition of 400 pieces, numbered.
