Legends of Czech hockey

The Czech Mint's "Legends of Czech Hockey" collector's series commemorates a defenceman who could be rivalled by few players in the world in the 1960s and 1970s. The gold coin is dedicated to Jan Suchý.

The most productive and probably the best defender in the history of our ice hockey played literally with the commitment of his life - he was the first Czechoslovak hockey player who selflessly blocked the opponent's shots with his own body. At the same time, he saw the modern concept of the role of a defenseman and moved from the defensive to the offensive in a flash, where he launched fearsome counterattacks. He was so successful in attack that he managed to win the title of the league's top scorer (to this day he is the only Czech defender to do so) or to score a hat-trick in just 47 seconds of play. He won silver at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics. He also won silver at the World Championships in 1965, 66, 71 and 74 and took home bronze in 1969 and 70. The championship in '69 was particularly significant for Czechoslovakia because our hockey players managed to defeat the Soviets shortly after the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops. It was Jan Suchý's goal that helped us to a glorious sporting and moral triumph.

The author of the coin was an experienced medalist and teacher Mgr. Petr Horák. He dedicated its reverse side to a faithful portrait of the defender surrounded by the inscription JAN SUCHÝ - MEMBER OF THE IIHF AND CZECH HOCKEY HALL OF FAME - GRENOBLE 1968. The last detail of the reverse is the jersey number 17. The coins of the Czech Mint are issued under the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the State of Samoa, and their obverse side therefore bears the following necessary attributes - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the national emblem, the face value of 25 DOLLARS (WST) and the year of issue 2018.

The coin is issued in a limited edition of only 200 pieces.
