OZNAMENI_CESKA_MINCOVNATomáš Garrigue Masaryk
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk is one of the most important personalities of our history. In 2017, it was 0 years since his death and in memory of his pure character, the Czech Mint issued a commemorative medal made of one ounce of pure gold.
T.G.M. became a legend during his lifetime and it is no wonder that the news of his final hours was received by the public with bated breath. His children, President Edvard Beneš and his wife, and Prime Minister Milan Hodža stood by his side in Lány, where he stayed. Millions of Czechoslovak citizens were also with him through the press and radio, which regularly reported on the progress of "Daddy's" severe pneumonia. Thousands of telephone inquiries and telegrams flooded the Prague diplomatic corps, and the Foreign Ministry was not relieved either - official information about the health of the head of state was also demanded by people from abroad, including the highest state representatives. "President Liberator" died on 14 September 1937 - the information was given by his son Jan in simple words: "My father died at 3 hours 29 minutes." The nation was deeply affected by the news. "Today Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the Liberator, spiritual creator and first President of the Czechoslovak Republic, breathed his last. This concludes with eternal peace his three-year struggle with death, a struggle in which the human body is never the final victor. We must accept even this death with resignation and humility," wrote Karel Čapek at the time. The poet Jaroslav Seifert then bade farewell to the President with the following verse: "A hundred years from now, perhaps our children's children will tell their children wistfully of the grey morning of the fourteenth of September, forever marked on the calendar."
The sad date is also marked in the calendar of the leading medallist, ac. Jan Lukáš, who dedicated a commemorative medal to our first president - the obverse is dominated by his charismatic but troubled portrait surrounded by the inscription TOMÁŠ GARRIGUE MASARYK, 7 March 1850 - 14 September 1937. The reverse side bears the Czechoslovak emblem in the form of a two-tailed lion, which is accompanied by a list of Masaryk's life roles - PHILOSOPHER, HUMANIST, DEMOCRAT, PEDAGOGUE, LITERATIST, FOUNDER AND FIRST PRESIDENT OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
The gold one ounce medal was issued in an edition of only 200 pieces.
