Detailed description
Chinese Panda
China began issuing its first gold coins with the motif of the Giant Panda in 1982 in five sizes: 1 ounce (nominal value 500 Yuan), 1/2 ounce (200 Yuan), 1/4 ounce (100 Yuan), 1/10 ounce (50 Yuan) and 1/20 ounce (20 Yuan). In 1987-88, coins were minted in a weight of 5 Oz and in 1986-1990 even in a weight of 12 Oz.
"Chinese Pandas" have become one of the main investment coins on the world coin market. They are minted from the purest 99.9% gold and despite their higher price, they are popular among investors and are a very common collector's item, mainly due to the annual change of the motif of the reverse side. The only exceptions were the years 2000 and 2001, where the motif remained unchanged. In 2015, coins were minted for the first time without weight and fineness markings.
In 2016, China switched to the metric system instead of the Anglo-American system of imperial units of weight in troy ounces. The coins were minted in five sizes: 30 g (500 Yuan), 15 g (200 Yuan), 8 g (100 Yuan), 3 g (50 Yuan) and 1 g (10 Yuan), and are again marked with the weight and fineness (.999).
In 2019, a new 10-year series was launched, which will take us through the life story of a panda. The reverses of each year will depict a panda from the smallest cub to an adult.
Motif 2019: the series begins with a newborn cub in its mother's arms
Motif 2020: a small panda, chewing bamboo, expresses the first steps towards independence
Motif 2021: the panda has grown up again and is climbing tree branches under the supervision of its mother
Motif 2022: the panda enjoys winter fun in the company of a peer. The special edition is complemented by a mint mark consisting of the numbers of the anniversary of the first minting of gold investment coins "40", into which a small silhouette of a panda is incorporated. The winter motif refers to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Motif 2023: The panda has reached adulthood, yet remains sociable and playful
Motif 2024: The panda becomes a caring mother
Motif 2025: A panda playing with its cubs
Motif 2026: Cubs playing among the bamboo grass
The individual motifs are complemented by the nominal value, weight and fineness.
The obverse of the coins is traditionally unchanged and depicts the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the Chinese characters for the People's Republic of China and the year of issue.
