Detailed description
Million Dollar Maple Leaf 1 Oz 2012 (.99999)
This unique gold investment coin, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for 2012 in an exclusive mintage of 99.999% gold (the world's finest gold investment coin) weighing 1 Oz (31.11 g), commemorates the 5th anniversary of the 2007 Maple Leaf 100K gold coin, the so-called "Big Maple Leaf".
The design on the reverse side of the coin bears the exact motif of the three maple leaves of the Maple Leaf gold coin issued in 2007, surrounded on the sides by the fineness "99999" and the initials of the designer Stanley Witten "SW". The hatched background is complemented by the inscription "CANADA" and the metal weight "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR" in the description.
The Million Dollar Maple Leaf, also known as the Big Maple Leaf, is a coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2007 with a unique weight of one hundred kilograms, a face value of one million dollars and a unique purity of 99.999% gold. When asked, "Why did the Canadian Mint mint mint the purest and largest gold coin in the world?" they replied, "Because we can."
In 2017, the Big Maple Leaf was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records with the status of the largest gold coin in the world and also for its unique gold purity. It held the title of the largest gold coin until 2011, when it was replaced by the Australian gold kangaroo weighing 1 tonne.
A total of five coins were struck, one of which was donated by a private collector to the Bode Museum in Berlin, from where it was subsequently stolen and presumably melted down.
The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt in the foreground of the hatched background of the coin, together with the initials of the artist 'SB'. The description of the coin states the inscription "ELIZABETH II" at the top, and the year of mintage "2012" and the face value "200 DOLLARS" at the bottom.
The coin is sealed in a plastic protective blister, which also serves as a certificate of authenticity with information in English and French.
