Krugerrand
The South African Krugerrand was the first gold coin in the world to be marketed for investment purposes. The 22-carat coins were first introduced in 1967 in one troy ounce (1 oz), and three more were added in 1980, in ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz weights. All of these coins contain 92% pure gold, with copper making up the remaining 8%, increasing durability. This gave the Krugerrand its characteristic''honey look''.
The coins have no face value, yet are considered legal tender of the country. According to the Constitution of South Africa and the rules of the South African Reserve Bank, the face value is converted daily based on the current exchange rate set by the London Stock Exchange.

Thereverse side of the coin is dedicated to South Africa's national animal, the jumping antelope or Springbok. It leaps across a plain dotted with Aloe claviflora. This plant is widespread in the dry interior of South Africa. The initials of the artist of the painting, Coert Steynberg, are given to the right below the motif. The upper circle is decorated with the name of the coin ''KRUGERRAND'', while the lower circle shows the weight of the gold contained in Afrikaans and English. The year of issue, divided into tens, is placed on the sides of the antelope.
Theobverse bears a portrait of Paul Kruger, former President of South Africa, designed by Otto Schultz. The combination of Kruger's name and the South African currency unit Rand gave rise to the coin's name. The portrait is accompanied by the country of origin ''SUID-AFRICA'' in Afrikaans and ''SOUTH AFRICA'' in English.
