Detailed description

The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III 2023 - 1/10 Oz

The Royal Mint's 1/10 Oz (3.11g) gold investment coin, struck in the finest 99.99% pure gold purity in 2023, is being released to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III in a special commemorative issue and limited mintage.

The reverse side of the coin features the Royal Cypher of Charles III, interpreted by John Bergdahl, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The King's personal cipher is made up of the initials of his name and title. The letter "C" with the Roman numeral "III" represents the name "Charles III." and the letter "R" is the Latin for King "Rex." The monogram is placed below the heraldic representation of the Tudor crown that Charles III associated with his royal majesty. The coin's rim is complemented by the description of the ceremonial event "THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023", which is repeated as a microtext and also as an anti-counterfeiting security feature at the coin's edge. The motif contains the author's small initials "JB".
The first royal cipher was compiled for Henry VIII. Tudor in the 15th century and also served in the following centuries to clearly identify the monarch. The monogram was unique and personal, unlike hereditary royal coats of arms, which were used by successive rulers. Another disadvantage of coats of arms was the variations belonging to the individual countries of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The royal cipher is used for royal and state documents and valuables, marking newly built buildings and palaces. The style of the Royal Cypher is not fixed and the final form is at the discretion of the monarch. Initials may be associated with the royal coat of arms or the symbol of the crown.
The importance of the royal cipher is illustrated by the fact that Charles III's cipher was published only a few weeks after his accession to the throne. This was a significant moment heralding a new era. For the same reason, it was also visible at literally every turn during the day of the coronation. The royal monogram was part of uniforms and other ceremonial and souvenir items. Charles III's royal cipher would replace that of his mother, Elizabeth II, which appeared on millions and perhaps billions of objects during his seven-decade reign. It can be found on buildings, everyday objects and souvenirs, but also on decorations, orders, valuables and, last but not least, coins.

The obverse bears the first coin portrait of Charles III in a version designed specifically for a series of commemorative coins on the occasion of his coronation. The portrait of the King, created by British sculptor Martin Jennigs, is accompanied by a Tudor crown. The description of the coin states "CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D", the face value and the year of issue "2023". The initials of the designer 'MJ' are included.

The issue is limited to a worldwide mintage of 53,000 pieces.
