Saint Vitus - Patron of the Czech Lands and the City of Prague

Saint Vitus watches over dancers and comedians, symbolized by a rooster and protects against snake bites, dog bites, lightning and storms. For us, however, he is above all one of the most important patrons of the Czech country and the city of Prague! To this saint is dedicated one of the most majestic temples in Europe and now also a luxury Smart coin from the Czech Mint weighing a full 100 ducats of pure gold.

According to legend, Saint Vitus was born around 293 in Sicily as the son of the pagan Hylas. At the age of seven, however, his nurse Cescentia and her husband Modestus converted him to Christianity. When he was twelve, Emperor Diocletian in Rome began his infamous persecution of Christians. Vitus became a threat to the whole family. Therefore, Hylas, after pressure from the imperial deputy Valerian, handed his son over to the Roman authorities. But even after the scourging, Vitus did not renounce his faith. By a stroke of luck, he, along with his nanny and her husband, managed to escape from captivity in a boat back to Sicily. But they did not escape for long - they were captured and Vitus was tortured again. After being thrown into a cauldron of boiling water, he emerged unscathed, according to legend. He was also said to have been thrown to a lion, but the lion licked his feet instead of eating him. In the end, Saint Vitus was beheaded for his unwillingness to renounce his religion. His feast day is commemorated by the Christian world on June 15.

Academic painter Vladimír Pavlica depicted the saint on the reverse of a 100-ducat coin with a palm branch in his right hand. As the patron saint of the earth, he also holds a scepter and wears an ermine cloak. The obverse bears a composition consisting of circular fields containing the necessary attributes of the issuer and the face value of 500 DOLLARS.

Due to the limited edition mintage, the mintage will value only 50 numismatic collections!
