Pope Benedict XVI.
Benedict XVI (proper name Sound Joseph Ratzinger, born April 16, 1927) is the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City State. He was elected Pope on 19 April 2005, and celebrated his inaugural Mass on 24 April 2005. Benedict XVI holds both German and Vatican City citizenship. He succeeded John Paul II as pope. From his days as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he has been nicknamed God's Rottweiler, and the tabloid press sometimes pejoratively titles him Papa Ratzi.
As far as theological views are concerned, Benedict XVI is often classified as a conservative. In his teachings and prolific treatises one can find a defence of traditional Christian doctrine and traditional values. He has served as a professor at various German universities and was one of the theological consultants to the Second Vatican Council. He later became Archbishop of Munich and Freising and finally Cardinal. By the time he was elected pope, he was serving as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and dean of the College of Cardinals.
Throughout his pontificate, Benedict XVI has stressed what he sees as a need for Europe - a return to fundamental Christian values as a response to the increasing de-Christianisation and secularisation in many developed countries. For this reason, he declares the relativist rejection of objective truth - and especially the rejection of objective moral truths - to be a central problem of the 21st century.
Benedict XVI was also the founder and patron of the so-called Ratzinger Foundation, a charitable organization that raises money by selling the Pope's books and treatises to promote education and provide scholarships around the world.
