John of Luxembourg

John of Luxembourg (10 August 1296 - 26 August 1346), also known by his nickname Blind, was the tenth King of Bohemia (1310-1346, crowned 1311), Count of Luxembourg , temporarily titular King of Poland.Jan Lucemburský

John attempted to rule with an eye to imperial policy, which was a priority for the Luxembourgers, and he modeled his rule on that of the French court. But the Bohemian nobility did not want a strong monarch. When John of Luxembourg came to Prague in 1310, the nation looked to him with sincere hopes that the peace of the last Premyslids would reign in the country after years of turmoil. John prepared them for bitter disappointment - but he too was disappointed. The 14-year-old John, at a time when he was about to become acquainted with the self-confident Bohemian nobility, listened to his father's advisors; on the contrary, the nobility made it clear to him who was the master of the country.

John was very successful in foreign politics: he was a regular guest of the Pope and the French kings, with whom he intensified his good relations by several suitable marriages. In 1322 he extorted Cheb as a permanent pledge from Louis the Bavarian (as an aid in the battle against Frederick the Ill). In 1319-1329 Upper Lusatia was annexed to the Bohemian kingdom, and in 1335 Wrocław, which included a large part of Silesia. In the 1320s and 1330s, John of Luxembourg was very active in Italy, and in 1331 the emperor confirmed his possession of the following northern Italian towns Bergamo, Bobbio, Brescia, Cremona, Milan, Novara, Pavia as an imperial pledge; he inherited Lucca.

In the last years of his life John was afflicted by a hereditary eye disease, which blinded him in 1339, and his participation in the battle of Crécy, where he fought on the side of the French, meant a rather voluntary death.
