Ducat medal - Miroslav Tyrš - 1932

Unique gold medal struck by the Kremnica Mint in 1932 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prof. Miroslav Tyrš.

The reverse of the medal depicts a profile likeness of Miroslav Tyrš with a traditional Sokol cap on his head, which is accompanied by the inscription "DR.MIROSLAV TYRŠ 1832-1884". The obverse side depicts a falcon with outstretched wings, on which the name of the author of the design - medallist Jaroslav Brůha - is stamped 'BRŮHA'. Above the falcon is the inscription 'THE CZECH-SLOVAK SOCIETY ON THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ITS DESIGNER 1932'.

Prof. Ph.Dr. Miroslav Tyrš was born on 17th September 1832 in the Sudeten German family of the estate doctor Dr. Jan Vincenc Tirsch at the castle in Děčín. Both his father and mother - Vincencie Tirsch, née Kirschbaum - were from Bohemia, but they spoke German and had German ancestors. papirna_Velke_LosinyAfter the death of his parents from tuberculosis, Tyrš was brought up from the age of six in the Czech patriotic family of his maternal uncle in Kropáčovo Vrutica in Mladá Boleslav, later in Stránov. After graduating from a trivial school and a junior high school, during which he attended gymnasiums in Prague due to his poor health, he entered university. The Revolution of 1848 had a great impact on the then sixteen-year-old Tyrš, as well as on his humanities studies, and he decided to transfer to the best classical secondary school at the time, the Academic Gymnasium, which was also patriotically oriented thanks to its prefects (Klicper and Jungmann). After graduating from the school, Tyrš went to study at the Faculty of Law of Charles University, soon to transfer to the Faculty of Philosophy, where he devoted himself to the study of philosophy and aesthetics. At the same time, he also studied mathematics and medicine. In 1860, he received his doctorate in philosophy in Prague, and a year later, after the fall of the Bach regime, he moved to Prague. In the spring of the following year, 1862, he became one of the founders of the Prague Sokol, of which he was the first physical education chief from 1862 to 1864. Plans to organize a large meeting of the growing Sokol movement were for a long time forbidden by the authorities and the first All-Sokol meeting took place with Tyrš's participation only in 1882. During the 1860s he stood several times as a candidate for Mladá Bohemia and was elected to the Czech Provincial Assembly and later became a member of the Imperial Council. At the same time, he also served as chairman of the art department of the Art Society, professor at the Czech Philosophical Faculty of Charles University, editor of the magazine Zlatá Praha and was generally very socially active until his death in 1884.

The medal was struck in a very low issue of 1,742 pieces, is very rarely obtained and is a rarity in the world of numismatics.
