Gold Coins Czech Crown 1997

The reverse sides of all four denominations are not designed as replicas of old historical coins. They are a modern interpretation of old coins using some original numismatic elements.

1.000 CZK (1/10 oz) represents Silesia. The depiction of the heraldic Silesian eagle on the obverse and the triducat of the Silesian Estates (1621) on the reverse uses the basic design of a relief image in an inner circle.

2.500 CZK (1/4 oz) presents Moravia. The heraldic Moravian eagle on the obverse is complemented by the reverse with the vine column motif characteristic of the Moravian Estates thalers (1620). The inner circle, separated by a fine pearl, provides an expressive connection between the two sides.

The 5,000 CZK (1/2 oz) is dedicated to Bohemia. The coin stands out for its masterful simplicity of composition. The obverse bears a Czech lion and the reverse a small groschen from 1587. The gradual impressiveness of the artistic concept and the content of the relief image is created by the evocation of the clip (a quadrilateral set on a scythe).

10,000 CZK (1 oz) is donated to the Czech Republic. The obverse side of the coin represents a distinctive conception of the great national emblem. The idea and plasticity of the motif is transformed into the form of a heraldic lion with a depiction of the Prague grosz on the reverse side. The coin has a sumptuous character and at the same time the necessary degree of decorativeness.

The minting of gold coins in the Czech Republic has a centuries-old tradition. Through the first gold coins of John of Luxembourg, known as 'florins' and 'ducats' of Charles IV, we come to the ducats with the most famous Czech theme, drawing on the legacy of St Wenceslas. This motif was typical for Czech ducats of the 15th and 16th centuries. The image of the saint remained until the time of the first Habsburgs (1612), only to reappear on the ducats of the Czechoslovak Republic some 300 years later (1921). The tradition of ducat mintage was temporarily interrupted by a set of coins (1, 2, 5 and 10 ducats) issued in 1978-1982 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the death of Charles IV.

After the establishment of the Czech Republic, the CNB decided not to continue minting gold ducats, which are commercial coins whose price depends on supply and demand. It began to mint coins in 999.9/1000 purity, and anchored the weight in troy ounces (oz) and fractions thereof to match the world trend. At the same time, it decided to put the denomination in a valid monetary unit. This guarantees owners that the Czech National Bank will accept these coins back at their face value.

Gold ducats as commercial coins have again appeared in the CNB's issuance plan for 2024 and 2025.

All gold coins from the Czech National Bank are an anticipated event and are accompanied by increased attention from numismatists and the general public.
