Detailed description

Wildflowers of Australia 2022 - Waratah

Gold investment coin minted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2022 in purity of the purest 99.99% gold with a weight of 1 Oz is released as part of the Wildflowers of Australia series. For the opening coin of the series, dedicated to the wildflowers of Australia, the telopea, known locally as the waratah, was chosen.

The reverse of the coin depicts three waratah inflorescences made up of up to hundreds of individual flowers, which attract birds with their ruby colour and sweet nectar. The arrangement is set against a background of several off-centre circles with the designer's subtle initials 'AS'. The denomination "100 DOLLARS" is indicated at the bottom of the coin.
Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) is endemic to the south-eastern part of Australia and since 1962 the national flower of the state of New South Wales. The Latin name telopea was given for the size of the inflorescence and loosely translated means "visible from a distance". The Aboriginal name waratah is a transliteration of 'red flowering tree'. The waratah shrub grows in sandy clay areas and grows to a height of 3-4 metres. Its swollen woody growth at the base (lignotuber) protects the shrub in the event of frequent fires and provides nourishment for rapid regeneration. The distinctive and exotic flowers of the waratah have also become a popular cut flower, including in Europe.

The obverse of the coin depicts the flowering stages of the waratah. The twisted stems are intertwined with a wreath of disjointed circles. A separate circle within the weave contains a traditional portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue "2022". The rim of the coin contains the weight and purity information "1 OZ .9999 Au".

The coin has Australian legal tender status and comes in a protective plastic capsule. The mintage is limited to just 5,000 pieces for the entire world!
