The Great White Shark 2015 1oz Gold Proof High Relief
This exclusive gold coin, issued by the Perth Mint in 2015 in Proof quality of the purest 99.99% gold and weighing 1 Oz (31.1g), is dedicated to one of the most dangerous predators inhabiting the oceans and seas of the world, the Great White Shark.
The reverse of the coin depicts in high relief the shark's attack on its prey as it emerges from the water. The background waves are complemented by the inscription ''GREAT WHITE'' and the mint mark ''P'', placed on the right side.
The Great White Shark is a viviparous fish that inhabits the coastal waters of the world's oceans at depths of around 200m. It can reach lengths of almost 7 metres and can weigh around 4 tonnes, with females being larger than males. With its stocky conical body and symmetrical tail fin, it can briefly accelerate up to 50 km/h, making it a very successful hunter. The colouration of the skin is grey-blue on the top and sides and white underneath, which helps the shark blend in with the surrounding water and makes it difficult to see. It is also equipped with a Lorenzini ampoule, a sense that allows it to detect the electromagnetic field created when animals move. White sharks have been a protected species in New Zealand since 2007.
The obverse depicts a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the artist's initials ''IRB''. The inscriptions ''ELIZABETH II'', ''AUSTRALIA'', the year of issue ''2015'', the face value ''100 DOLLARS'' and the weight and purity of the metal complete the rim.
The coin is supplied in a wooden box with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
