OZNAMENI_CESKA_MINCOVNAWar year 1942
The year 1942 was the turning point of the Second World War. The greatest battle in human history was about to take place on the Eastern Front, the African campaign had reached a turning point, and the future of the newly opened Pacific front was about to be decided. The first gold coin in the collector's miniseries War Year 1942 is dedicated to the pivotal Battle of Midway.
When, in 1941, Japanese naval forces attacked the American military base at Pearl Harbor without warning, it appeared to be a devastating victory. The Japanese, however, failed to sink a single carrier, and it was these vessels that in the months that followed proved to be a key element in the conduct of the war on a vast expanse of water dotted with numerous islands. The Imperial Command wanted to rectify its mistake, so the following summer it attacked Midway Atoll, where it intended to fight a decisive battle. Thanks to intelligence efforts, however, the Americans managed to respond adequately and sent three of their own counterparts to meet the four Japanese carriers. The Japanese missed an important moment of surprise, and the clash that followed was unprecedented in the history of naval warfare. For the first time in history, it was not the guns of the warships that intervened in the battle, but only the aircraft taking off from their decks. The battle was fought over a distance of nearly two hundred kilometres, and the vessels of the warring parties did not even come into visual contact. The battle was indeed decisive, but not in the way the Japanese intended. The fleet of the Empire of the Rising Sun was completely decimated - it lost all four carriers, one heavy cruiser and countless other equipment and lives, and its only success was the sinking of one enemy carrier. The Empire never recovered from this defeat, went on the defensive, and its dreams of dominating the Pacific were dashed...
"Technical and military things suit me," says the medalist Luboš Charvát, who has made the most of his passion for creating coins. He dedicated the reverse side to a dramatic clash - the American dive bomber Dauntless attacks the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi, whose deck is shaken by an explosion. A Japanese cruiser can be seen in the background, and a United States flag closes the scene. The English copy of the reverse reads BATTLE OF MIDWAY. The obverse side is dedicated to the attributes of the island of Niue (the issuer that allows the Czech Mint to mint its own coins), i.e. the profile and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2017 and the face value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD). The composition is completed by five helmets belonging to the nations that will appear on this year's war coins - German, American, Soviet, British and Japanese.
