Mary (Mother of Jesus)

Mary, sometimes also Mary, is the mother of Jesus of Nazareth in Christianity and Islam, the fiancée of Joseph the carpenter.

She was related to Elizabeth, who was of the family of Aaron. Six months after Elizabeth's conception, the archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and greeted her with the words that have become the basis of a prayer used to this day among followers of the Marian cult: "Be well, covered with grace, the Lord is with you." (Luke 1:28 (KJV)) and announced to her that she would become the mother of the promised Messiah, although she would remain a virgin. Mary submitted to God's will with the words: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." Luke 1:38 (KJV)).

She then went on a long journey to visit her pregnant relative Elizabeth, who lived with her husband Zacharias. As soon as she entered their home and greeted Elizabeth, she paid her homage as the mother of her Lord, and Mary responded with a hymn of praise to the Lord known as the Magnificat. (Luke 1:46-55) After three months, Mary returned home to Nazareth. An angel appeared to her betrothed Joseph in a dream and told him, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for what has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." (Joseph then took her to himself, despite the fact that she was pregnant.
