Detailed description
Series "Great Explorers" - Vikings - 2012
An exclusive gold coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2012 in top proof quality in the finest purity of 999.9 gold. This coin is the first of six coins issued from 2012 to 2017 in the Great Explorers series.
The reverse of the coin depicts Norwegian explorers with a sailing ship moored, for the first time off the coast of the New World. The design by Yves Bérubé captures the exact characteristics of the Vikings of the time: the ship, the clothes, the weapons. Contemporary findings prove that it was the Norwegian trader Bjarni Herjólfsson who first sighted the shores of North America at the end of the tenth century. In 1960, archaeologists also discovered a small Viking camp at L'Anse aux Newfoundland Meadows, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inscriptions on the coin are "CANADA", on the right the year of issue "2012" and the face value "200 DOLLARS".
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanne Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D G REGINA".
The coin comes in a burgundy leatherette box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 3000 pieces for the entire world!
