Detailed description

Tall Ships - Full-Rigged Ship

This exclusive gold coin, issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2023 in Proof quality and weighing 1/2 Oz (15.43 g) in purity of the purest 99.99% gold, is the second coin in the "Tall Ships" series and is dedicated to the Full-Rigged Ships. This collectible series reflects Canada's maritime history through legendary vessels that have gained worldwide renown.

The reverse of the coin depicts a magnificent full-rigged sailing ship with sails down, sailing on a calm sea with the mission of bringing its cargo to its destination as quickly as possible. There are the characteristic transverse sails at the masts and a quartet of triangular sails at the bow. Ample cargo space for commercial cruises is provided by the ship's sturdy hull. The motif is completed by the inscription "CANADA", the denomination "200 DOLLARS", the year of issue "2023" and the initials of the artist "NH".
Full-rigged ships got their name for their full plating, which could deliver the required speed to large merchant and warships. The full jib sails on three or more masts gave the ships a majestic appearance not only when sailing in full wind, but also at the dock. At that time, furled sails revealed a system of rigging and rope ladders that sailors climbed up the tall masts to prepare the ship for sailing. However, the characteristic cross-sails of full sail were already used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans on their ships, as well as by the Vikings on their drakkars.
For Canada, sailboats were essential for supply, transportation and coastal protection between the 18th and 20th centuries. The three-masted Hector float has an important place in Canadian history. The "Canadian Mayflower" carried the first wave of Scottish emigrants to Nova Scotia in 1773. Some of the settlers settled off the coast and contributed to the development of the town of Pictou, where a replica of the Hector is now moored and open to the public.

The obverse shows a portrait and reign years of Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D.G. REGINA".

The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, limited to only 800 pieces for the entire world!
