Big Five 5 Oz Lion, Leoprad, Rhino - High Relief
This unique set of gold coins issued by the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire for 2016, 2018 and 2019 is minted from the purest 99.9% gold and weighs 3 x 155.5 g (5 Oz). These five-ounce coins are part of the highly successful Big Five series. This set includes three coins of this series of African animals lion, leopard and rhino.
Lion Coins
The reverse of the coin features a detailed head of a lion. The portrait is highlighted by the high relief processing technology used and the antique finish. The motif is surrounded by the weight "5 OZ", the purity "999 AU" and the inscriptions "MAUQUOY" (name of the Belgian mint), "HAUT-RELIEF (high relief in French) and "LION". The design also includes the maker's mark.
The lion is a mammal of the Felidae family and the second largest felid after the tiger. In the wild, lions live to be 10-14 years old, but in captivity they can live to be 20 years old. Lion populations used to be widespread throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and even America, but today they are found only in Africa and a few places in India. There is a marked sexual dimorphism in lions, with the main and defining feature of male lions being their manes. Scientists used to think that the colour, shape and density of the mane could distinguish the different subspecies, but the opposite is true; colour and size depend mainly on the environment in which the lion lives. Lions that live in environments with lower temperatures (e.g. European and North American zoos) have a denser and usually darker coloured mane.
The obverse shows the national emblem of Côte d'Ivoire with the inscriptions 'REPUBLIQUE DE COTE D'IVOIRE', the year of issue '2016' and the denomination '10 000 FRANCS CFA'. The edge of the coin is numbered.
The coin comes in a luxury wooden gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 99 pieces for the whole world!
Leopard Coin
The reverse of the coin depicts the detailed head of a leopard. The portrait is highlighted by the high relief processing technology used and the antique finish. The motif is surrounded by the weight "5 OZ", the purity "999 AU" and the inscriptions "MAUQUOY" (name of the Belgian mint), "HAUT-RELIEF (high relief in French) and "LEOPARD". The design also includes the maker's mark.
The leopard is a large cat-like beast found in India and Africa. Adult leopards usually weigh between 17 and 90kg. They are distinctive for their yellow-ochre coloured coat, which has dark oval spots. They often roam in the treetops, where they take their prey.

Rhinoceros Coin
The reverse of the coin depicts the detailed head of a rhinoceros. There are currently five species of rhinoceroses, two in Africa and three in South Asia. They have one or two horns, which are made up entirely of horn. The robust body is covered with thick, leathery plates and an adult can weigh up to 3.5 tonnes. The brain is small in proportion to their size, weighing only something between 400 and 600 g. They are short-sighted, but this is compensated by a highly developed sense of hearing and smell. Rhinos are a critically endangered species. It's estimated that up to 90% have been poached for their horns.
