Detailed description

Rūaumoko - Guardian of Volcanoes - 1 Oz

The exclusive Bank of New Zealand 2023 Proof 1 Oz pure 99.99% gold coin is inspired by Maori mythology and features Rūaumoko - the Guardian of Volcanoes.

The reverse of the coin depicts Rūaumoko under a volcano spewing smoke and lava. The motif is created in the traditional Maori art style. The design uses characteristic ornaments such as spirals, geometric shapes and lines. The coin's name 'RŪAUMOKO - GUARDIAN OF VOLCANOES' and the denominations 'TEKAU TĀRA' and 'TEN DOLLAR' in Maori and English are shown on the rim.
Rūaumoko is the god of volcanoes and earthquakes in Maori mythology. He is the son of Ranginui (sky father) and Papatūānuku (earth mother). Legends recount the event that led to the creation of the world. Ranginui and Papatūānuku were the parents of many gods who huddled in the darkness of their tight embrace. The desire for light and space led Tāne Mahuta, the god of the forest, to separate the first couple. The youngest, Rūaumoko, was still at his mother's breast at the time and thus penetrated her body. Papatūānuku tried to keep her son warm with an inner fire. But the volcano god was fueled by the heat to rage and fury. With his every movement, the fire rose to the surface and created fissures from which volcanic lava gushed. Other versions of the story again explain the earthquakes. It is a manifestation of the life of Rūaumoka underground or also a harbinger of his birth. The rumbling and shaking of the earth accompanies his attempt to escape his mother's womb.
The mythology of the indigenous people of New Zealand used this legend to explain the frequent tectonic and volcanic activity of the country, which lies at the boundary of the Pacific and Indian plates.

The obverse of the coin bears a portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "NEW ZEALAND", "ELIZABETH II", the year of issue "2023" and weight and fineness data.

The coin is housed in a themed box with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to only 99 pieces for the whole world!
