Detailed description

Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Cypher

Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for 2022, this exclusive 1 Oz (31.16 g) gold coin of the purest 99.99% gold in premium proof quality is both a farewell and a thank you for her faithful service and devotion to Britain's longest reigning monarch through the Royal Cypher of Elizabeth II. .
The coin is being released as part of the RCM's special commemorative 'Queen Elizabeth II's Reign' issue, which features a four-portrait portrait of the Queen on the obverse.

The reverse side of the coin bears a simple yet one of the most common motifs associated with the reign of Elizabeth II. The royal cipher is a monogram consisting of the initials of the name and title. The letter "E" with the Roman numeral "II" represents the name "Elizabeth II." and the letter "R" is the Latin for Queen Regina. The monogram is placed below the heraldic depiction of the Crown of St. Edward, which is the most important part of the British Crown Jewels collection and is used exclusively in the Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. A reference to the jewel can also be found in the fine beaded border on the coin's rim. The four more prominent elements are gemstones, each worth one coin portrait of Elizabeth II struck on Canadian coins since 1953. The inscription "CANADA" and the coin's face value of "200 DOLLARS" are tastefully incorporated into the design.
The first royal cypher was made for Henry III. Tudor in the 15th century and also served to clearly identify the monarch in the following centuries. The monogram was unique and distinctive, unlike hereditary royal coats of arms, which were used by successive monarchs. Another disadvantage of the coats of arms was that they had variants belonging to individual countries of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The royal cipher is used for royal and state documents and valuables, marking newly built buildings and palaces. The style of the Royal Cypher is not fixed and the final form is at the discretion of the monarch. Initials may be associated with the royal arms or the symbol of the crown.
The importance of the royal cipher is illustrated by the fact that it was one of the main points of preparation when organising the coronation of Elizabeth II. The royal monogram had to be part of uniforms and other ceremonial and souvenir items. During the seven decades of Elizabeth II's reign, the royal cipher "E II C" appeared on millions and perhaps billions of items. It appears on buildings, everyday objects and souvenirs, but also on decorations, orders, valuables and, not least, coins.

The obverse bears four coin portraits of Elizabeth II minted on Canadian coins, linked together (the portrait artists are, from left: Susanna Blunt (2003-2022), Dora de Pédery-Hunt (1990-2002), Arnold Machin (1965-1989) and Mary Gillick (1953-1964)). The likenesses are guides to the various stages of the Queen's reign as recorded in numismatics. They are completed by the years of reign '1952' and '2022', separated by a Tudor rose, and the inscription 'ELIZABETH II D-G-REGINA'.

The coin comes in a luxury leatherette box along with a numbered certificate in a limited edition of 400 pieces for the whole world!
