Postcards of the time - Charles Bridge - Proof

The fourth gold coin of the Czech Mint weighing one half gram is traditionally housed in a replica of a period lithograph postcard. The issue, which will delight numismatists and philocartists alike, is dedicated to the famous Charles Bridge.

The historical postcard, which served as the model for the coin packaging, was published in 1897 by the art publishing house Winkler and Voigt in Leipzig. It is dominated by a multi-shot view of the Charles Bridge and the monuments associated with it - the Lesser Side at the foot of Prague Castle, the Old Town and Lesser Town Bridge Towers and the oldest bridge statue of St. John of Nepomuk. The composition of the postcard is complemented by German labels (Karlsbrücke u. Kleinseite, Kleinseitner Brückenthürme, Der altstädter Brückenthurm, St. Johannesstatue a. d. Karlsbrücke), German inscription Gruss aus Prag (Greetings from Prague) and floral decoration. This particular postcard, which comes from the collection of Pavel Vursta, was sent on 13 October 1898 and was postmarked the following day in Hořice, the town of delivery. An interesting feature is the preserved address side with an offset stamp worth two krejcar, although at the time of posting the currency was already in CZK.

The relief of the gold miniature is the work of the talented young medallist Ludmila Kodytková. She dedicated the reverse side to a view of Charles Bridge with its Gothic Old Town tower and the bilingual inscription PRAHA - PRAGUE. The obverse side then belongs to the attributes of the island of Niue, the issuer which provides the Czech Mint with a licence to mint its own commemorative coins. These are the name and portrait of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2017 and the face value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD).

The original issue is an affordable collector's piece as well as a valuable gift or regional attention grabber.
