Maori Art Series - 1 Oz Gold Coin - Papatuanuku and Ranginui
This exclusive gold coin, issued by the Bank of New Zealand in 2014 as the fourth in the "Maori Art" series and minted by the Royal Australian Mint in premium proof quality, weighing 1 troy ounce (31.1g) in the finest 99.99% pure gold, is dedicated to Maori mythology - the creation of the Universe and Earth - Papatuanuku and Ranginui.
Heitiki (2010), Hei Matau (2012), Koru (2013), Papatuanuku and Ranginui (2014)
The reverse of the coin accurately depicts a carving by the famous New Zealand artist Cliff Whiting entitled "Te wehenga o Rangi raua ko Papa" (The separation of Heaven and Earth), which shows the god Tane, son of the Heavenly Father Papatuanuku and Earth Mother Ranginui, separating his parents with all his might to create a world of light. The motif is complemented by a face value in English and Maori. The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NEW ZEALAND" and the year of issue.
The coin comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a very limited edition of only 250 pieces for the whole world!
The coin is housed in a beautiful Wakahuia case (a decorative carved container for your most valuable personal items), which has been made from New Zealand black maire wood. The double spiral (takarangi) carved into the lid depicts the separation of Ranginui and Papatuanuku. The etui were designed by contemporary Maori artists Rangi Kipa and David Hakaraia.
