Detailed description
50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing
A unique bulging gold coin minted by the Royal Australian Mint in 2019 weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g) of the purest 99.99% gold is issued to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing.
The coin bears the figure of an Apollo 11 astronaut and the Eagle lunar module on its reverse. In the background of the design is the planet Earth with the Australian continent visible and the flight path of the space mission marked. The inscription "50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LUNAR LANDING" and the weight and purity data complete the coin's rim.
The obverse design depicts a radio telescope set to the moon, referring to the contribution of Australians in ensuring the reception of communication signals during the Apollo 11 mission. The background is a transcript of astronaut Armstrong's words after his ascent to the surface of the Moon. At the top of the coin is the denomination "ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS". The small inner circle, near the bottom edge of the coin, contains a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley with the initials "IRB" and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the year of issue 2019.
The coin comes in a luxury gift box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 750 pieces for the whole world!
Apollo 11 was a manned space mission to land on the Moon, ascend to its surface and return safely to Earth. The mission participants were Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins. The Apollo 11 comet was carried into Earth orbit by a Saturn rocket on July 16, 1969. Three days later, a manned flight orbited the Moon, and on July 20, 1969, the Eagle space module with Armstrong and Aldrin aboard landed on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis). On July 21, at 2:56:15 UTC, Neil Armstong became the first man to step onto the lunar surface and uttered memorable words: "It is a small step for man, but a great leap for mankind". Together with Aldrin, they spent 2.5 hours outside the lunar module and collected nearly 22 kg of rocks. After 21.5 hours, they returned to the Columbia command module, which for that time was piloted in orbit only by Collins. They returned to Earth on July 24 by landing in the Pacific Ocean.
