Detailed description
King Charles IIII's Royal Cypher
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for 2023, this exclusive 1 Oz (31.16 g) gold coin, made of the purest 99.99% Proof gold, commemorates the beginning of a new era in the British monarchy through the Royal Cypher of Charles III on the occasion of his coronation on May 6, 2023.
The reverse of the coin bears a simple yet one of the most important emblems that will accompany the reign of Charles III. The King's personal cipher was unveiled by Buckingham Palace on 26 September 2022 and is made up of the initials of his name and title. The letter "C" with the Roman numeral "III" represents the name "Charles III." and the letter "R" is the Latin for King "Rex". The monogram is placed beneath a heraldic representation of the Tudor crown, which the king personally chose for his cipher. It was the diamonds and pearls that are part of the Tudor crown that inspired the border on the coin's rim. The design tastefully incorporates the inscription "CANADA" and the coin's face value of "200 DOLLARS".
The first royal cypher was made for Henry VIII. Tudor in the 15th century and also served to clearly identify the monarch in the following centuries. The monogram was unique and personal, unlike hereditary royal coats of arms, which were used by successive rulers. Another disadvantage of coats of arms was the variations belonging to the individual countries of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The royal cipher is used for royal and state documents and valuables, marking newly built buildings and palaces. The style of the royal cipher is not fixed and the final form is at the discretion of the monarch. Initials may be associated with the royal arms or the symbol of the crown.
The importance of the royal cipher is illustrated by the fact that Charles III's cipher was published only a few weeks after his accession to the throne. This was a significant moment heralding a new era. For the same reason, it was also visible at literally every turn during the day of the coronation. The royal monogram was part of uniforms and other ceremonial and souvenir items. Charles III's royal cipher would replace that of his mother, Elizabeth II, which appeared on millions and perhaps billions of objects during his seven-decade reign. It can be found on buildings, everyday objects and souvenirs, but also on decorations, orders, valuables and, last but not least, coins.
The obverse shows a portrait of Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, accompanied by the years of the monarch's reign "1952 .... 2022". The four pearls incorporated into the year symbolizes the four likenesses of the Queen that have graced Canadian coins. The coin description states "ELIZABETH II", "D.G.REGINA" and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a deluxe leatherette box along with a numbered certificate in a limited edition of 375 pieces for the entire world!
