Detailed description

India Wildlife - Peacock

The exclusive gold coin, issued by the British Overseas Territory of St Helena for 2020 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold, weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g), is part of the India Wildlife series. The second coin in the series features the peacock, which is the national bird of India.

The reverse of the coin depicts a peacock with a long train of characteristic peacock-eyed feathers. The bird is minted in detailed raised relief. Its head with crown and tail feathers partly overlap the inner field of the coin, which is decorated with a grid pattern. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE - CASH - 999.9 GOLD".
The crowned peacock is native to India and Sri Lanka, where it seeks out wooded and scrubby areas in the wild. Peacocks are a polygamous species living in groups of one cock and a small number of hens. During courtship, the males also try to attract the interest of the females with their beautiful colourful plumage. Because of its bright coloration and long fan-shaped tail feathers, it has been kept as an ornamental bird for more than 3,000 years. In India, the peacock is the embodiment of wisdom, much like the owl. Because of its fearlessness in scaring away snakes, it is referred to as Mayura, the snake killer, in Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages of the Indians.
It is said to have come to Europe thanks to Alexander the Great, who sent the first peacock to Athens from his campaign in India. Thus, exhibition feathered creatures began to appear in the gardens of aristocrats and parks as early as antiquity.

The obverse depicts a coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, which is accompanied by the artist's initials "J.C.", the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REGINA .F.D.", the denomination and the year of issue.

The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a very limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world!
