Detailed description
India Wildlife - The Macaque
The exclusive gold coin, issued by the British Overseas Territory of St Helena for 2022 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold, weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g), is part of the India Wildlife series. The sixth coin in the series features the Lion Macaque, which is one of the most endangered primate species due to human activities.
The reverse of the coin depicts the macaque on a tree branch in a threatening position to ward off intruders. The primate is struck in raised relief with many details evident in the elaborate coat texture. Part of the image extends over the inner field of the coin, which is decorated with a grid pattern. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE - CASH - 999.9 GOLD". The inclusion of the inscription CASH (cash) draws on the period designation of the coin issues of the original East India Company, referring to its significant numismatic history.
The lion macaque (Macaca silenius) is also sometimes referred to as a vanderu. It belongs to a group of 26 species of macaques, some of which are now extinct. It is the most beautiful macaque ever. Its coat is black except for a long grey mane on the cheeks and head. It can reach a length of up to 60 cm, and its tail, enriched with a tuft of hair at the end, can be as long as half its body. It spends most of its life in the treetops of the tropical rainforests of south-west India. These primates live in matriarchal groups averaging 20 individuals. They are very territorial and try to intimidate intruders with their vocal displays and tooth pricing before attacking.
Unfortunately, the current pressures of civilization have triggered the distinction of plantations by burning tropical forests. The unscrupulous behaviour of man is thus steadily stealing the natural habitat of many members of the fauna. As a result, the lion macaque has been classified as an endangered species on the brink of extinction.
The obverse bears a portrait of King Charles III on a background of a reticulated design. The likeness is complemented by the initials of the author Glyn Davies ''G.D.'' The description of the coin states ''CHARLES III. D. G. REX. F. D.'', country of origin ''ST. HELENA'', the denomination and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a gift box with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a very limited edition of only 200 pieces for the whole world!
