India Wildlife - Elephant
This exclusive gold coin, issued by the British Overseas Territory of St Helena for 2021 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold and weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g), is part of the India Wildlife series. The third coin in the series features the Indian elephant, the largest land animal in Asia.
The reverse of the coin depicts the Indian elephant in detailed relief. The magnificent animal passes through the inner field of the coin, forming a decorative grid pattern. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE - CASH - 999.9 GOLD".
The Indian elephant inhabits grasslands and tropical rainforests in India, Sri Lanka and southeastern Sumatra.
It lives in groups of about 40 individuals consisting of females with young. Males leave the group as adults and return only during the breeding season.
The Indian elephant is visibly smaller compared to the African elephant. Smaller ears and a high forehead are prominent features. The tusks are virtually absent in females and males also have much shorter tusks or none at all.
The elephant has a prominent place in Hindu culture and religion. One of India's most revered gods, Ganesha, is depicted with an elephant's head. They are still used for forest work or transport because of their teachability and agility. War elephants were trained until the 19th century. The Indian elephant is an endangered species, its population is estimated at no more than 50,000 individuals.
The obverse depicts a coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the initials of the artist Jody Clark against a background of latticework decoration. The inscriptions '- ELIZABETH II - D.G. REGINA - F - D - ST. HELENA -', the denomination and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a very limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world!
