India Wildlife - Cobra
The exclusive gold coin, issued by the British Overseas Territory of St Helena for 2022 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold with a weight of 1 Oz (31.1 g), is part of the India Wildlife series. The fourth coin in the series features the cobra, a respected and revered animal in Indian mythology.
The reverse of the coin depicts the cobra raising its body high and menacingly spreading its characteristic neck ribs. The serpent is struck in detailed raised relief, which is accentuated by the elaborate scale structure. Part of the image extends over the inner field of the coin, which is decorated with a grid pattern. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE - CASH - 999.9 GOLD".
The Indian cobra (Naja naja) is known in this country for the two dark spots on its neck ribs as the bryozoan. It occurs over a wide area of the Indian subcontinent. It belongs to the big four venomous snakes whose bite is most dangerous to humans. The venom of the Indian cobra paralyses the muscles and causes suffocation without prompt medical attention. It grows to one and rarely two metres. In Indian mythology, it represents an important snake deity. Everyone also remembers the snake charmer, who illusorily controls the cobra by playing the whistle.
The obverse depicts a coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, which is complemented by the artist's initials "J.C.", the inscription "ELIZABETH II. D.G. REGINA .F.D.", the denomination and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a very limited edition of only 200 pieces for the entire world!
