India Wildlife - Bengal Tiger
The exclusive gold coin, issued by the British Overseas Territory of St Helena for 2019 and minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold with a weight of 1 Oz (31.1 g), is the inaugural coin of the India Wildlife series. India's national animal, the Bengal tiger, was chosen for the first coin in the series.
The reverse of the coin features the majestic tiger, minted in detailed raised relief. The beast runs through the inner field of the coin, forming a decorative grid pattern. The rim of the coin contains the inscriptions "ONE OUNCE - CASH - 999.9 GOLD".
The Bengal tiger, better known as the Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), is an endemic species with a limited distribution in the forested areas of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sundarbans and Myanmar. It lives solitary in its own extensive territory, which males leave only during the mating season when they go in search of a female. The current population living in the wild is estimated at 2,500 individuals. Sanctuaries are now being established for the strictly protected Indian tiger species in India and Bangladesh, which have seen its numbers increase slightly.
The obverse depicts a coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, which is accompanied by the artist's initials 'J.C.', the inscription 'ELIZABETH II. D.G. REGINA .F.D.", the denomination and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a very limited edition of only 100 pieces for the entire world!
